2800 Series ISR Fan Noise

If you are familiar with Cisco’s 2600/2600XM Series routers and have recently purchased an ISR 2801 or 2811 you may at first be a little shocked to find that those routers fan’s run significantly louder than those of the 2600’s. In fact the dissipation level of the 2801/2811 is twice that of the older routers and if you’ve had the chance to listen to the 2801 fan kick in to high gear, it’s quite loud.

Well James Weathersby (a TME within the ISR BU) has put together a nice presentation explaining the reasoning behind the noise differences. You can find the presentation here: ISR Noise Level but in short the noise level is due to the added POE support which added additional power and they have more integration on the box so the additional noise is normal and rest assured that your router is not going to blow up :-) … but if does, be sure you has an active SmartNET contract on it!!!
