So I was reading through the What's New in Cisco Product Documentation for July and got down to the routers section and low and behold I came across a router that I had not heard of before. The router is called the Cisco Secure Router 520 series and looks ideal for small businesses with up to 50 users and teleworkers who want secure connectivity to corporate LANs and to the Internet. These routers provide advanced security features that include secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) access and comprehensive threat defense with Cisco IOS Firewall, Intrusion Prevention Solution (IPS), and URL filtering.
There appears to be 3 main models of the 520's each of which can come with integrated wireless or without. The there models are as follows:
- Cisco Secure Router 520 Ethernet-to-Ethernet Routers (4 - 10/100 LAN ports & 1 - 10/100 WAN Port)
- Cisco Secure Router 520 ADSL-over-POTS Routers (4 - 10/100 LAN ports & 1 - ADSL-over-POTS WAN port)
- Cisco Secure Router 520 ADSL-over-ISDN Routers (4 - 10/100 LAN ports & 1 - ADSL-over-ISDN WAN port)
Since I had not heard of this platform (I thought maybe it could a variation of the UC500 but it's not), I then did a search to see what I could come up with and I ran across this document, "Release Notes for Cisco Secure Router 500 Series with Cisco IOS Release 12.4(15)XZ"...this intrigued me because that code is available on CCO today and so I read down a bit to see the document even listed the product part numbers. So after reading through that document I went out to the IOS Upgrade Planner to see is the router was listed and what code was available to run on the platform. Well I was once again shocked to see the router listed there under 12.4 code as SR520. So I clicked it to see all the versions of code available for the platform and there were 3 versions:
- 12.4(20)T
- 12.4(15)XZ1
- 12.4(15)XZ
Anyway the documents that provide further details regarding the platforms are list here:
